Junior call case 2
Fifth metatarsal fracture.
- The base of the 5th metatarsal is one of five specific areas of the foot you should always look at in every foot/ankle film. The other four are:
- o Lateral process of the talus
- o Anterior calcaneus
- o Apex of the calcaneus (Bohler’s angle)
- o Navicular
- A “Jones fracture” is a fracture that occurs DISTAL to the tuberosity (the lateral bump) at the 5th metatarsal base. Some books use 1.5 cm distal as a measurement. Management = often requires surgery
- An avulsion fracture is a fracture that occurs AT the tuberosity/tip of the 5th metatarsal base. Much more common than Jones fractures. (90% of base of 5th metatarsal fractures). Management = usually conservative
